CHARLES GULLUNG Charles Gullung first picked up a camera as a kid in New Orleans to capture the skateboarding exploits of his friends. He hasn't put it down since. Moving from Portland to NYC and back, Charles began his career working along side photographers, the likes Robert Frank and found himself interested in street photography and photographing real life. “I love working with people, getting in their heads a bit and understanding who they are. Once Sarah and I started having kids, that became a whole new avenue for me to explore and it took on a life of its own.” “Having a family of five kids, I’ve become more acutely aware of the small, in-between moments. There’s always so much chaos at home. And those precious moments come fast and furious. So, when I’m on assignment, I find I’m able to capture that “little picture” that tells the big picture story with greater ease. We’re a very close, passionate family, and on set I strive to have that same kind of openness: a loose shoot environment where everyone on set contributes. It should be fun first, professional, and real.” For commercial work, Charles often finds himself shooting in multiple locations in one day making it necessary to change gears and moods quickly. He’s able to tell a story in minute, one client once said, capturing a 360 degree visual story. Whether he’s shooting a library or a single ad campaign, Charles is known for his thoughtful, energetic and photojournalistic approach to creating honest and real images. His clients include Stonyfield, TD Ameritrade, Lifely Prudencial Insurance, US Bank, Novartis, Nemours Hospital, Media Arts Lab, Vanguard, P&G, Nike, Reebok, Gerber, Fisher-Price, Huggies, Nickelodeon, The Children's Cancer Center of Oregon, AARP, Condé Nast Traveler, Outrigger Hotels, UNDP, Parents and Runner's World.
