ABOUT - WILLIAM MEBANE
Will is a portrait, reportage and still life photographer who works on editorial, commercial and fine art projects. He is a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and Bloomberg BusinessWeek. A recipient of a J. William Fulbright Fellowship, his work has been widely exhibited both in the states and abroad. Will lives in Brooklyn, NY, with his wife, Martha, and their two boys.
“In my work I combine portraits, still life and social landscapes to construct stories about the emotional essence of a place or of an event. I feel like an archaeologist or an investigator looking for clues that lie in the gesture, in the quirky detail, or in the off-moment. In the last couple of years I’ve been really fortunate to work on special projects about the presidential election, the changing economy, the criminal justice system, and the state of journalism."
When not assignment, Will works on special projects with his co-collaborator and good friend, Martin Hyers, and on independent projects as well. He's published two books - EMPIRE and Mental Hygiene, with the Museum of Contemporary Photography and Newest York Arts, respectively. Will is currently at work on a series of books that combine photographs made on assignment with photographs made while wandering around his neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY.
